Kearny High Alumni Association and Kearny High School
put together football videos (and more) from Kearny back to about 1957. Worth a look, as it includes the CIF game for 1973, and much more. It really shows what progressive coaches that Tom Barnett and Birt Slater were.

  1. Hello Rick. Thanks for all the work you do. I found this on you tube. A former player posted the 14 games Morse played in 92

I also have a question and a story to tell. Do you recall the the first team to present a pregame chant? Some teams do the hacka now others do jumping jacks while spelling out their team name.
Back in 1974 Morse head coach John Shacklett introduced a pre-game chant known as Tiger Jays. He had on his staff two student teachers from Cal Western. One of the student teachers presented the idea to Coach Shack and Tiger Jays were born. The ritual lasted 36 years. Lenny Arevalo long time Morse and Lincoln coach went for a jog with the two student teachers. The student teachers asked Coach Rev where he would be in 10 years. Lenny replied he loved coaching and would probably be still working at Morse. So he asked them what they planned on doing? We are going to be in the NFL sure enough they did. Jimmy Anderson worked for the Bengals for several years and Dante Scarnecchia of the Patriots

    1. I rememeber some pregame chants but I couldn’t say by which teams. That block M formation by the team before the game in Hawaii was unique. Lenny Arevalo has been a friend of mine since we were in junior high at Lincoln, before Lincoln had grades 10-11-12. Lenny now is living in Virginia with his sister, having moved from San Diego about a year ago. THanks for writing, Mark.

  2. I was trying to find the all league selections for 1964 but don’t know where to look. I think two of our teammates from La Jolla might have been recognize for football. Also, where can we find the Brietbart Game selections and results. I remember they used to have all star games between LA and SD and later between City and County all stars. The county would practice at the old Naval Training Center and the city at the Marine Corp Recruit Depot. We went to watch the practices when two friends made the team. The games were at the old Balboa Stadium and were for graduating seniors, if I remember correctly.

    1. All of that information is available in microfilm files at the downtown or El Cajon libraries. I’ve never done anything on the Breitbard game, except for a couple early years when it was Southern California versus Los Angeles City. If the libraries ever open I’ll see what I can come up with.

    2. DICK ALLMON I PLAYED FOR LA JOLLA IN 1964. THEN PLAYED FOR USC 1966,1967,,1968. THREE ROSE BOWLS AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONS IN 1967

      1. I remember Dick Allmon. Outstanding player for Gene Edwards’ Vikings and I think he also was a pretty good shot putter in the spring, maybe 53-54 feet.

  3. This is really a fun site. I played FB at La Jolla HS for the 1964 season and later played at UCSB. You have us down as 4th in the Western League. I was always under the impression we had a three way tie for third. Was there a reason we were down as 4th? I also wrestled and later coached FB, wrestling, track, and a variety of other sports, mostly in the Panama Canal Zone. Would you be able to post wrestling results? Also, only track results in meters are posted.
I found it interesting that Coronado HS did a “telegraphic” track meet with Balboa HS back in the 1950’s on one of your news articles. I coached at Balboa High School and always thought such a “virtual” track meet would be fun as we had few schools to compete with down there.

    1. Nice catch, Jim. I went back through the 1964 scores last night. La Jolla, Clairemont, and Madison each tied for third in the Western League in 1964 with 2-3 league records. La Jolla best Madison, 14-6, but lost to Clairemont, 28-19. Madison beat Clairemont, 26-0. You can access all of the scores by going to the “Football” Link on the home Page and scrolling down to “Scores”. They’re available by teams or by years. My webmaster, when he returns, will make those corrections. The “telegraph” or “postal” track or cross-country meet was fairly common in the 1950s. Track ties were converted to the metric system when the U.S. went from yards to meters in the early 1980s. Thanks for writing

  4. I was at a Hoover High track and field meet when Ed Hanks cleared 6′ 11 ” in the high jump, I think it was 1959 or 60. Rick and I and maybe two others ran from 49th and Federal blvd up and back to the radio towers behind the Rancho drive in theater, maybe a total of four miles, I started to tire and Rick said Colvin don’t stop, keep pushing no matter what, the wonderful mentor Rick was, that spirit always stayed with me throughout life.
Hi Rick from Sheridan Wyoming. Ken Colvin

    1. Hanks cleared 6-9 1/4 in a dual meet with Lincoln in 1964. I sell remember those jogs to the radio towers. All the best, Corky. It’s been a long time.

      1. Hanks was also a capable basketball player and a strong defender. He guarded me in a game in 1964 and I felt the pressure. I believe he went to Stanford. Thanks for writing, Terry. I hope you enjoy reading our blogs.

      2. Eddy Hanks became a doctor. Notice the spelling of his first name, still mispelled as “Eddie” on the Hoover High Wall of Fame.

      1. Don: Steve says that Pickering’s :21.13 for 2011 was on his list, but the list that was sent to me for 2011 did not have Pickering in the 200. Steve assured me that Pickering’s mark also will be in the 2018 list, which I will publish on my blog.
        Thanks again.

  5. Rick–Saints is going to play Grossmont High on December 2, 2017 to open our new gym and commemorate the first game at Dougherty gym in 1951…I would appreciate any info you have or help you can provide in us finding former players from both teams who might I might be able to contact and invite to the game. Thanks. Mike.

  6. Rick, for the past 10-12 months I’ve been compiling “all-time performance lists” for Kearny’s boys and girls track (dating back as far as 1951) which I’d like to share with you. Please e-mail me at jump4khop@aol.com and I’ll be happy to pass it along — as well as to any interested Komets (or non-Komets) reading here. Thank you for all your non-stop, meticulous (hard) work!

    1. Send ’em on, Matt. If I can be of any assistance….My favorite Komets track athlete was Ed Buchanan, although there have been a lot of outstanding runners up there on the Mesa.

      1. By the way… I have another minor task for your webmaster: In the 1969 Football all-time “game results” (by school) section, Kearny finished 6-0 (1st place) in league. Their only loss that year was in the opening round of the postseason. Thanks again for all your meticulous recordkeeping!
