Two Open Division quarterfinals near shockers send surprising 7 seed Grossmont to 6 seed Wolverines and fourth-ranked Mission Hills visits No. 1 seed Francis Parker in the other half of a potentially contentious semifinals playoff bracket.
Grossmont (22-4) eliminated No. 2 Mater Dei (23-3), 62-54, and Westview (19-8) dumped No. 3 Cathedral (22-7).
There were eight form reversals in Open, I, II, III, and IV divisions as home teams posted an overall 19-9 record, but eight losses (in bold type) were on the home courts of favorites.
Biggest upset was No. 10 Mission Vista’s 48-46 win over No. 2 Patrick Henry in D-III. No. 14 San Diego Southwest topped No. 11 Rock, 44-36.
The Timberwolves are part of the Vista School District but have a northeast Oceanside address, just near state highway 76 and between Interstates 5 and 15. The school opened in 2009 and has approximately 1,725 students, for those unfamiliar or are attuned to football, in which Mission Vista doesn’t participate.
Semifinals play in all six divisions resumes Wednesday, Feb. 20, as competition should tighten in the rounds of four.
