After a terrific 57th Arcadia Invitational, action moves on to the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut and the 105th Russell Cup in Carpinteria this week.
League, Section qualifiers and finals, and the 105th state meet in Clovis are on the horizon.
Wind of more than accepted 2.0 kilometers is noted with a “w”.

Did I read the male Fontenot, running 13.47w, is a Freshman? Have we ever had 3 hurdlers under 14 at the same time in San Diego, even wind-aided? This is a banner year nationally for our athletes. I can’t wait to see how we rank in the latest T&FNews.
Fontenot is a freshman. His dad is the basketball coach and his sister is one of the country’s best in her hurdles. We went a long time without a sub-:14 high hurdler. Fontenot has a legitimate :13.7 in the highs. Great season for our tracksters. Thanks for writing, Terry. We met at one of those Walt Harvey lunches years ago.
Rick, as I recall when you were attending Lincoln, you had 3 hurdlers, Hultz, Grey, and Groff, with hand-times of 14.3, 14.5, and 14.6, and adding .24 seconds for automatic timing, I still don’t know if we have had any school match that in 65+ years since. Still, I am so impressed with this years stats, particularly on the track.
Terry, the CIF finals at El Monte’s Arroyo High in 1958 was a horrible day for the Hornets and for me. I got a speeding ticket driving up with a couple pals and another one driving home. The L.A. Times had picked the Hornets to win the team championship in the Southern Section finals, but Ronnie Grey was spiked in his hand and finished sixth in the highs, which Bill (Poogie) Hultz had won. Albert (Grasshopper) Groff, who I have his best time at :14.7, did not qualify the previous week in the Divisional semifinals at Huntington Beach. Grey was closing fast in the low hurdles at El Monte, had caught George (JoJo) Williams of Pasadena Muir, and was almost even with the leader, Compton Centennial’s Bennie Sankey, when Grey collided with the last hurdle, stumbled and was unplaced. The Lincoln hurdlers had run 1-2-3 in the City League meet in Balboa Stadium and Times writer Jack Hefley was impressed, but Hefley later told me, “Never bet on hurdlers.” I’m surprised at the quality of hurdlers this year, but I also was surprised that, despite his great time (:13.62 with no wind) at Mt. Sac, Fontenot ranks 16th in the country in the highs. Keep those knowledgeable and interesting notes coming, Terry.
Oh yeah. Track and field had some entertaining years mid 60’s into the 70’s. Some great athletes and school rivalries. Arnie Robinson and Doyle Steele come to mind quickly.
Old Balboa stadium with that new rubberized asphalt track held some great international meets in those years too.
Keep up the current reporting. Thanks. Love the track and field news.
Thank you, John. I got my start covering track for the Lincoln High school paper years and years ago. Fell in love with it.
