2025 Flag Football Week 6: “Dee-fence!” is Lady Barons’ Shout

Bonita Vista 2023

As the section’s only undefeated team, Bonita Vista (12-0) dominates with defense.

Taking advantage of the newly adopted national rules that allow a pass rush without 2024’s mandated, 7-second delay, Ella Gomez leads the section with 37 sacks, and Dariyan Wilson has 17 interceptions. Holding opponents to 6 or less points in 9 of 12 games, and a scoring edge of 353 to 88 is a winning formula.

The next test for the Lady Barons is Mater Dei (10-1), with its 366-46 scoring stat, and 6 points or less in 10 of 11 games, on Oct. 7.

Torrey Pines (14-6) moved up to No. 2 in ratings with a win over Carlsbad (14-4), 25-18.

2025 Flag Football Weeks 3-4: Barons, Lancers, Falcons San Diego Section Leaders

Bonita Vista (9-0),  Carlsbad (12-2), and Torrey Pines (12-4) top the local rankings.

Point Loma’s Ella Poulin avoids Hoover defender Alicia Lara and passes to Eva Cruz, in  25-0 Pointers win.

The Lady Barons have yet to be challenged; their next test may be Steele Canyon (9-2). Carlsbad’s Lady Lancers have proven themselves with wins over Classical (twice) and Grossmont, and could rise with success over Westview. The Falcons losses are to non-San Diego teams and Grossmont (11-2), and will face Carlsbad shortly.

Individual standouts include Mission Bay’s Valerie Young, who leads the nation with 1,397  receiving yards, according to Max Preps, and Imperial quarterback Mirella Barron is fifth with 3,442 passing yards.

Bonita Vista (6-0) and Carlsbad (9-2) top local rankings with Torrey Pines (5-2) and Classical (6-4) in pursuit.

The Barons bounced back from a disappointing first-round playoff loss in 2024, and a 12-7 record but have outscored their opponents this season, 179-49.
Carlsbad is building on a 15-10 inaugural season and a loss in the 2024 Division II championship game to Westview, with losses only to San Juan Capistrano JSerra and Mission Hills.

Torrey Pines  has lost to Newbury Park and state second-ranked Newport Beach Newport Harbor.  Classical  is looking to get back to its D-I 2024 championship form.

The chatter this year has been about adjusting to nationally standardized rules that apply to all levels of play, high school, college and Olympics. The major differences from 2024 are changes that allow rushing the quarterback, running in all situations and ‘screen blocking’ everywhere.  A  complete list here.
