1979 Track: Tony Banks Wins State championship in Penalized 440
State meet competition is the most difficult, as many athletes who stood out in a strong San Diego Section season experienced in the two-day test in Sacramento’s Hughes Stadium. Just five of the 18 finalists from the original list of 54 entries scored in the top three of the 28 boys and girls events and only Tony Banks of Morse was a gold medalist.
Banks was declared winner of the 440 in :47.28 after finishing second to Palo Alto Cubberley’s Bill Green, disqualified for running out of his lane.
Sue McNeal of Carlsbad matched the winning 5-foot, 9-inch high jump but was second because of a miss at a lower height.
Tony Banks was three-year veteran of state 440 race and winner this season.

2025 Track Week 5 Boys: Injured Arrington, Jr., Reportedly Sidelined for Rest of Season
Brandon Arrington, Jr., Mount Miguel’s defending state 100 meters and 200 meters champion, will miss the San Diego Section finals and state meet, according to two media sources. Arrington sustained a leg muscle injury in the Grossmont League 4×100 relay at Mount Miguel May 9 and did not compete in the San Diego Section Division I final last week.
The Matadors’ junior attempted to continue after the Grossmont 4×100 relay, finished fourth in the 100 in :10.95, and was done for the evening. He is the state leader at :10.21 and :20.35 in the 100 and 200 and second in the country in the 200. Arrington ranks seventh in the U.S. in 100 races in which there were wind readings and automatic timing, according to athletic.net.

2025 Track Week 3: Arrington Jr., Scorches in 400 Attempt
His coaches at Helix, where Brandon Arrington, Jr., competed as a freshman, believed the 400 meters might be his best event. Having dominated the California 100 and 200-meter scene since transferring to Mount Miguel in 2024, Arrington, Jr., took a fling at the 400 last week.
Arrington raced to a :46.51 clocking in the season’s final dual meet against Grossmont and vaulted into second place in California behind the :45.69 of Temecula Valley’s Jack Stadlman.
The Matadors’ junior also became the fourth San Diego county runner to cover the distance in under 47 seconds and he ranks 11th in the country in the event this season.
Until the late 1970s San Diego County schools competed in the 440-yard, quartermile distance. The distance for 400 meters is 437.443 yards with a conversion to metrics being 0.3 seconds.
Fully electronic times also affect hand stopwatch timing, depending on the distance.
Many old 440-yard races started from a chute and covered just one turn of the track and 220-yard races were on a straightaway.
Mission Bay star Jim Cerveny’s 1957 state meet record of 1:52.7 in the 880 at Berkeley began in a chute and covered three turns of the track.
