Ron Riedberger, 92, passed recently in Vista, where he served the school district as teacher, coach, and administrator for 37 years, including five seasons as coach of the Panthers’ basketball team, 1960-61 through 1964-65.
Riedberger’s 1961-62 squad posted a 14-8 record and defeated Fallbrook, 81-67, at Escondido High in the San Diego Section 2-A championship game.
The Panthers twice shared Avocado League championships under the graduate of Concordia College in Minnesota, and compiled an overall record of 54-50.

Very interesting. Thanks! – Ray S.
Thanks. I had not known that Mr. Riedberger was once the basketball coach at Vista High School (my alma mater). I had not met him. I had seen his pic in the yearbook though- he had been in administration by then. The coach when I was there was Duane Barnes. They were led by Doug Gudmundson (also the shortstop on the baseball team – my keystone partner). Good athlete.
I was a very young sports writer and I covered that 1-A championship game between Fallbrook and Vista. The Panthers were quick, as I recall and had 6-8 or 6-9 player. I’m not sure he played much. Thanks for writing, Ray.
